ऑगस्ट २०१८ मध्ये कर्नाटक मधील चिकबल्लापूर जिल्ह्यात गंगाप्पा यांना त्यांच्या शेतात मक्याच्या पिकाची पाने कुर्तडलेली दिसली. पूर्ण शेताचं नुकसान पाहताना गंगाप्पा यांच्या डोळ्यात अश्रू आणि राग एकाच वेळी होते. त्यांनी लगेच सरकार दफ्तारी झालेला प्रकार कळवला.   दक्ष अधिकाऱ्यांनीही धारवाड कृषी विद्यापीठाच्या शात्रज्ञांना त्यांच्या शेतात पाठवलं. शास्त्रज्ञांनी शेताची पाहणी केली, त्यांच्यासाठीही शेतातील ही अळी नवीनच होती. शेताची भयावह स्तिथी पाहून त्यांनी तातडीने त्याचे जनुकीय निदान करण्यासाठी अळीचे नमुने भारतीय कृषी अनुसंधान केंद्र दिल्ली आणि National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR)  यांच्याकडे  पाठवले. या दोन्ही संस्थांनी त्याचे DNA  तपासले. ८ ते १० दिवसात या संस्थानी त्याचे रिपोर्ट दिले. परंतु याच ८-१० दिवसात आसपासच्या ४ जिल्ह्यांमध्ये ह्या अळी ने मक्याचे ७०% नुकसान केले होते. एवढ्या झपाट्याने वाढणाऱ्या ह्या नवीन अळी चे नाव आहे फॉल आर्मीवोर्म (FALL ARMYWORM ) म्हणजे लष्करी अळी. आपल्याकडे अनेक प्रकारच्या लष्करी अळ्या आढळतात परंतू ही अळी...
